About the Business

Mr. Lyn Rathburn first went into business in 1983 selling herbs and spices. His talent and focus for such a botanical effort was clear. His customer base grew steadily as he supplied local Houston, TX retail shops and high-end restaurants with a large variety of fresh herbs and spices. Although his green-thumb for such an endeavor was obviously more than adequate, in the early to mid 1990s, Lyn decided to bring to life his long standing dream of opening a specialized nursery for cacti and succulents.

The Cactus King's first location was in The Heights neighborhood of Houston, TX. As time passed, It was clear that more space was needed. At that time, Lyn decided to relocate to 625 West Canino Road Houston, TX 77037. Despite being further out, the property's size increased dramatically to nearly 6 acres. This allowed for 15 greenhouses, the ability to separate rarer and more vulnerable species of plants from the general population and to grow larger varieties of succulents and cacti.

Established in 1983.

Specialties

The Cactus King is a family run cactus and succulent farm/commercial nursery located in Houston, TX. The owner, Lyn Rathburn, has expertise that few others share as a result of over 30 years experience in this specialized area of horticulture. With Mr. Rathburn at the reigns, he and his dedicated team provide the most extensive selection of cacti and succulents for sale worldwide! The Cactus King sells both retail and wholesale in person and online. Participating in environmentally sustainable growing practices is at the crux of our philosophy. Aside from the beauty and magic that cacti and succulents bring (and it's substantial), they save an incredible amount of water. To be specific, The Cactus King uses approximately 250 thousand gallons of water annually. A nursery of the same size that sells other popular landscaping plants, utilizes anywhere from 5 million to 12 million gallons of water each MONTH! The Cactus King sees no need to compromise the needs of our plant for the needs of its business.
