Originally opened in 1971, in the heyday of gay liberation, Seagull Salon was named for Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Richard Bach's best-seller. It was the first unisex barber shop in NYC (if not the country). Over the years Seagull has changed hands several times, evolving from an idiosyncratic barber shop to a creative hair salon offering color services as well as trend-setting haircuts. Current Owners - Lead Stylist and writer Shaun Surething and Johanna Fateman, Writer, Musician and a regular contributor to Artforum and 4Columns - acquired Seagull in the spring of 2006. Under their direction, Seagull caters to their New York community's discerning cultural tastes including, but not limited to hair. Seagull clients are artists, writers, fashion editors, musicians, actors, and everything else. In 2015 Seagull moved from its tiny ground floor location to it's current spacious, light-flooded upstairs space outfitted with a dazzling, totally unique decor and tons of amazing art

Seagull Salon, located in the West Village, specializes in bold creative color, platinum blondes, balayage highlights, and hair cuts for both women and men. We have won accolades from XOVain and Nylon.com for our work with platinum blonde hair color, pastel, and vibrant hues. We are known for our work with subtle balayage highlights and have been praised as the go-to blonde hair salon in NYC by Refinery29. Our work with curly hair has been written up in The New York Times Style Section and our haircuts from classic bobs to chic edgy short hair cuts have been applauded by Racked, Guest of a Guest, Buzzfeed and more.
