I started working as a carpenter helper while I was in college going to school for electrical engineering. Carpentry and construction was actually never my plan in life but ended up working out better than I could have ever asked for. I started learning some of the basic of building at home with my mother a few yrs prior to moving for college and had a great experience with the hands on aspect. After going to school for a couple months, I saw an ad on Facebook for a master carpenter that needed a full time helper and rather than going back into the retail industry I decided to make a change and give it a try. Being that I didn’t have much experience starting out my boss at the time introduced me to everything from designing, drawing, cutting, building, installing and much more within the finish carpentry business. From there I moved to Atlanta and worked under another contractor and picked up more experience until I got the the point I felt comfortable running my own business.

Hello I’m a small black business owner in the Atlanta area, I work primarily with residential carpentry/construction. I have been in the construction industry for about 8 yrs now and plan on getting my General Contractors license this year. As a carpenter my experience is mostly interior finishing work which mostly includes custom cabinet building and installing, trim work, interior/exterior doors and windows, flooring, drywall, painting, accent walls, ect. On the construction side I also do work such as concrete, deck/patio building, siding, demo and cleanup, tile work and bathroom remodeling. I mostly work independently but also have connections with other contractors for bigger projects that I may come across. As a small business owner my name and reputation means a lot because I rely heavily on customer support and referrals so I take the quality of my work and customer satisfaction very seriously.

Getting started in the construction industry was just a way of making money initially but as I learned more and got around the environment I realized I could make an impact with the work I was doing. While there are projects that are considered more luxury and high end, there are also projects that people who are struggling financially need done at their homes as well. Having the skill and knowledge to know how to fix everyday problems that may arise within your home is a very important and lucrative business if done properly. Being someone who hasn’t always had the means of hiring someone to do the work, learning it hands on was essential over the years. But as I grow and business expands I hope to be able to take more time to teach everyday people the basic skills they need to tackle some of their projects around the house or turn the skill into another source of income.
