About the Business

JoAnna Filomena moved from New York City back to Washington, DC in early 80's to be closer to her aging mother, Filomena. Having come from NY, JoAnna realized that Washington didn't really have any restaurants that offered more than a short meal with unmemorable atmosphere and service within the Washington area. She saw a need for an Italian restaurant of the style that she had come to know in NY, a place where dinner was more than just a meal and a trip home. JoAnna transported some of her mother's furniture to the restaurant and set up a dining room (our Filomena Kitchen) that looked similar to Mother Filomena's dining rooms over the yearsr. After almost three years of contractors and painstaking labor, JoAnna had finally managed to turn the shells of an old building into an Italian Family Fantasy - the Filomena Ristorante. The doors opened on May 23, 1983 and for over 30 years all can catch a glimpse of time forgotten and have a wonderful memorable dining experience.

JoAnna has been involved in the restaurant business her entire life.  Moving from NY in early 1980's she saw that Washington lacked the kind of dining experience not only like restaurants in NY but to take it one step further and give the experience that her mother, Filomena gave her family and friends as she was growing up and into her early adulthood before moving to NY.  JoAnna Filomena is proud to have been one of the very first women to open a top level, fine dining restaurant in Washington, D.C.  Getting a S.B.A. Loan and making a dream come true, she is became inspiration to women across America and testifying before Congress the need for more women to be funded with S.B.A. Loans.
