About the Business

The Black Lion is a reconstruction of part of one of the oldest breweries in the world.
It was established in the 1500s by Deryk Carver - the first Protestant to be martyred under Mary I - known as 'Bloody Mary'.
Mary had restored Catholicism as the state religion, and revived heresy laws that outlawed the practice of Protestantism - persecuting and executing any who dissented.
One night in 1554 the Sussex sheriff, Edward Gage, broke into Carver's home above the brewery, and found a dozen men engaged 'in prayer, saying the Service in English as set forth in the time of Edward VI'. Preaching or practising service in English was a crime punishable by death.
Carver was found guilty of heresy and burnt at the stake in Lewes on 22 July 1555. Because he was a Brewer, he was placed in a barrel to burn. As he died, he flung his bible into the crowd as a final act of defiance.
The current pub was reconstructed in 1974 as a replica of the original brewery, using many original materials.

The Black Lion is all about live music, served up 6 days a week. Up-and-coming local bands, live and authentic Blues, swinging live Jazz Sundays, Brighton's most popular Funk and Soul bands - right through to renowned names on the DJ circuit... We've got the lot! Our fantastic DJs have a simple brief: "keep 'em smiling, make 'em dance" We play anything from Northern Soul, Motown, Funk, Rock & Roll, Ska, Mod Revival, Indie, Reggae and Old School Hip Hop... it's a fairly eclectic blend, but we find it attracts lots of the right kind of people, and they seem happy when they stumble out at 3am. The Black Lion is fast becoming the go-to place for top-class, affordable cocktails in Brighton. With an extensive list made from quality, fresh ingredients, the best Bloody Marys in town, and weekly changing creations, you'll find something for every taste - always made with care and a flare by our inventive bar team. Gil Beurel is our Head Chef. A classically trained Breton, Gil has 18 years' experience across Europe and some of London's top hotels. He's been with us full-time since May 2009, consistently producing some of the best pub food in Brighton - all prepared fresh, in-house, using the best local ingredients.
