Yunnan By Potomac Noodle House was a gradual development. The owner Zongmin has enjoyed Yunnan food from childhood in Yunnan and had introduced it to her husband and co-owner John many years ago. Zongmin and John realized there wasn't a restaurant specializing in mixian rice-noodles in the Greater Washington Area, and they knew they must share Yunnan’s uniquely delicious food culture with the DMV. They flew to Kunming, the modern capital of Yunnan, for three weeks of tasting and slipping into restaurant kitchens to learn from local chefs. After returning to Alexandria, Zongmin and John finally took the first steps to opening a restaurant in their neighborhood specializing in mixian noodles, small plates, and desserts from Yunnan. In Old Town Alexandria, just across the Potomac River from Washington DC, is a diverse community that dines out often and has cosmopolitan tastes. A raving review from the Washington Post & awards for Best Cheap Eats have come since opening in Feb. 2019.

Yunnan is a beautiful diverse region in southwest China, offering a variety of unique flavors and textures in its distinctive cuisine - not your typical Chinese food. The soul food of Yunnan is Mixian - delicious rice noodles - which are prepared with braised meats, rich broths and sweet, savory and spicy sauces. Mixian bowls are at the core of our menu and are complimented by a variety of unique small plates like daily house-made dumplings and hearty bao buns.
