About the Business

After 51 years as Dimitri's Garden Center, the 3rd generation decided to keep the family business going as Urban Garden Center. Our grandparents, Dimitri and Calliope Gravanis, started the business in 1959 right on the corner of 89th St. and Madison Avenue. Now the business is located in the historic La Marqueta Public Market on East 111th St. and Park Avenue. This is just a few blocks away from where our family first made a home here in the United States. Stop in and check us out.

We are a full service retail garden center. We carry annuals, perennials, herbs, soil, mulch, fertilizer, organic pest/disease control, pottery, planters, tropical plants, outdoor shrubs & trees, and lots more. We can custom-order just about any product on the market. We also manufacture custom-made cedar planters at our facility. Delivery is available. We also carry the largest selection of Christmas trees aka Xmas Trees in the Upper East Side and Harlem. From Thanksgiving to Christmas, we will have extended hours.

Aspasia G. (Business Owner)

Aspasia was born and raised in East Harlem.  Her family started a flower shop on the corner of East 89th St and Madison Ave in 1959.  That grew into a large plant store (Dimitri's Garden Center) on East 86th St between Lexington and 3rd (above what is now the Shake Shack).  They then moved to a large 12,000 sf site on Second Ave between 102nd St and 103rd St.  After 25 years there, they moved to the South Bronx right by the 3rd Ave Bridge for 2 years.  When they had the opportunity to move back to East Harlem, they were lucky to find any space in Manhattan.  They ended up in the iconic and historic La Marqueta Public Retail Market under the MTA viaduct on Park Avenue.   They created a beautiful space with little resources. Her family continues the business here after her passing in December 2017.  She will be missed and she is probably smiling right now as the business grows into the 4th generation.  Hard to believe our family has been spreading garden love for 60 years in NYC.
