About the Business

The Washington was first opened at the turn of the 19th century as a public house for local tradesmen by Sheffield based cutler George Wostenholm, known for his famous Wostenholm switch blade. At the heart of what was then known as the Rockingham Wheel, the pub acted as a hub for the surrounding industrial hive. Wostenholm had a large impact on the city of Sheffield and his roots go deep into the city's planning. His love of America saw the Sheffield road system designed around the American's (then developing) grid system and led him to name his workers' public house after their capital city.

Over the years the pub has changed hands many times, as all pubs do, and famously had a spell under the ownership of Pulp drummer Nick Banks. The Washington has always been known as a hot spot for local live music, a tradition that continues to this day.

Established in 1810.

Specialties

The Washington is the spiritual home of Sheffield's music scene. Through the years they've all passed through; drinking, performing and perhaps even working behind the bar. From the glory years of The Limit when Pulp would meet here, to intimate gigs from Wet Nuns, The Washington has seen it all. We're a little off the beaten track, which is just the way we like like. Not too far, mind. We're stumbling distance from Division Street, on the bottom corner of Devonshire Green. We're the only city centre pub to have a beer garden big enough to host our own music festival in, and a dancefloor intimate enough to feel every groove of every record. Each week we have cutting edge bands and left of center DJs during the week and good times party sounds at the weekend 'til three in the morning. You're just as likely to be nestled in beside a bright eyed student having their mind blown by one of our DJs as a grizzled old muso reminiscing about the time they saw Debbie Harry in here. You'll find them all in The Washington.
