About the Business

The Royal Oak was built in 1756 by John Morris, a native of Woodstock, on a strip of land rented from St John's College. Morris was a wheelwright by trade and set up his forge on the premises, consisting of six rooms opening out from a central fireplace. By 1770 his son, Thomas, had followed him into the trade, and while the two of them repaired the wheels of passing coaches, carts and wagons, John's wife and daughters served refreshment and drinks. An ancient oak in the nearby hedgerow undoubtedly lent its name to the hostelry

Established in 1756.
