About the Business

The Mayflower is named after the ship that set sail from a nearby quay in 1620, bearing the Pilgrim Fathers to America. At the time there was already a pub on this site - the Shippe - which was rebuilt in the 18th century and renamed the Spread Eagle and Crown. The pub's current name is much more recent (1957) when it was renamed in honour of its historic associations after the pub was refurbished. Captain Christopher Jones, captain of the Mayflower, moored the ship here to avoid paying mooring taxes and collected passengers before continuing the journey to Plymouth to pick up remaining passengers. Captain Jones is buried in an unmarked grave in the church across the road - he died shortly after his return from America, a little over a year after the Mayflower first sailed.

Established in 1621.

Business Owner

Paul G. (Business Owner)

Paul and the team took over in June 2011 and have done a marvellous job to create a cosy, inviting and cool environment with top notch food. Feedback has been positive from both locals and tourists alike and word of mouth is spreading about the great riverside pub. Come and join in the popular Tuesday night quiz, dine in the upstairs restaurant, or enjoy a drink on the jetty over the Thames.
