The first magic show for a small audience in an elegant setting was in 1857 in the Viennese salon of Johann Nepomuk Hofzinser. Unlike the large, stage-size illusions and shows with casts of assistants and dancers, these salon or parlor shows bring the audience into the performance. Currently, there are magic shows featuring skill, manipulation, and prestidigitation for a small audience in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and several other large cities.
The Magic Duel premiered in Washington DC in 2014. In "The Magic Duel," two magicians compete on stage for the title of "Washington DC's Favorite Magician," with the audience choosing the winner. In 2019, Ryan Phillips joined the show as "the challenger." The Magic Duel is an ongoing show; the performance calendar is updated monthly, and tickets are typically available three months in advance.
