About the Business

Tawara was started in 1981 by my mother, Mrs. Ishii. In the early years she cooked and served each order personally and my brother Ken and I would serve the few tables we had.

We've grown a bit since then, as a business and as people, but Mrs. Ishii still comes in everyday to teach new dishes and keep a stern (but kind!) eye on the staff.

Everyone in the Ishii family lives for this restaurant , we regularly schedule trips to Japan to study food and test new seasonal recipes at home everyday.

We hope you enjoy your experience at Tawara, and thank you for keeping us in a business we love for over 30 years!

Established in 1981.

Business Name

Tawara Japanese Restaurant

Specialties

Tawara specializes in homey Japanese cooking. Many of the dishes are what we grew up eating in Japan. That means noodles, simple meats & seafood in homemade sauces, sushi & of course dishes that celebrate the seasons. We also have a catering business that serves many hotels, country clubs, hospitals, businesses and private homes in NJ & NY. Did you know that Tawara can come set up a sushi bar at your next event, or deliver a buffet lunch to your home or business?

Business Owner

Yuriko I. (Business Owner)

Mrs. Ishii grew up in western Tokyo and arrived in the South Bronx  in the mid-seventies. At that time, few people were familiar with real Japanese food, and she was happy to cook as often as she could for anyone willing to try her dishes. Eventually she became known for her cooking throughout our neighborhood and was invited to more and more parties, all potluck of course!
