About the Business

Owners Mike and Barbara Sivells met in September of 1989. Barbara and Mike always shared visions and goals of one day "being their own boss". Mike would take Barbara on Sunday drives and describe what he foresaw as a family oriented restaurant. In the meantime, Mike and Barbara would co-found many businesses together over the years, never giving up their dream of one day opening their very own barbecue restaurant. In 2006 that perfect opportunity presented itself in the form of an original log cabin built in 1896 and located, in their now hometown, of Fairdale Kentucky. The log cabin was formerly a flower shop. They knew this was the perfect time and location to make their dreams to come true. The Shack in the Back BBQ opened its doors in September of 2006.

Established in 2006.

Business Owner

Barbara and Mike S. (Business Owner)

Back in September of 1989, age of 19, I moved to Louisville, KY from Niagara Falls, New York and started working at the Radisson Hotel as a waitress. A few days later, Barbara met Mike Sivells, he was the Bellman also at the hotel. He would come in for his morning coffee and we would make fun of the way each other talked.  Since the day they met, Mike always said that he was going to open a BBQ restaurant one day.  He drove Barbara through his home town of Hopkinsville KY and  told stories of how he  didn't have much money growing up and as a teenager would take an old metal crate that the Milk Man would deliver milk in, flip it over and grill on it.  He also told Barbara stories of how he and his grandfather would smoke hogs in the ground.  Being from New York, I thought that was really strange. Little did I know what a wonderful "barbequer" he was until the day he smoked me my first meal!  I knew then that we shared a dream of having our own restaurant would someday become a reality!
