About the Business

Rinda West left her post as a professor of English in 2002, to become a landscape designer. She studied plants at the Chicago Botanic Garden, earning two certificates, and design at Northwestern. The business has grown over the years, changing and evolving with the new challenges every season offers. In 2006 we were honored to be listed in the Chicago Tribune as one of 9 people to watch in home and landscape design. In 2010, the national magazine Deck, Patio, and Pool (a Better Homes and Gardens publication) included an article on a deck we designed and continue to maintain. In 2018, Michael Anderson left his downtown number crunching job and joined as a partner in Rinda West Designs; Mike is skilled in container design and customer relations, and he looks forward to being more active in the design process. Located in Lincoln Square, Rinda West Designs serves Chicago and the near suburbs. Rinda and Mike are members of the Landscape Design Association.

Established in 2004.

Specialties

Generative Land (previously Rinda West Designs) offers family-friendly and planet-friendly gardens. We specialize in deck design and container plantings but we also enjoy creating spaces for family fun, entertaining, and hanging out. Long-time members of the Landscape Design Association, we create gardens that do not depend on chemicals, that work to keep water on site, and that are sustainable over many years, using native plants when appropriate and creating low-maintenance four-season beauty. We do not offer snow removal services nor do we do lawn care.
