Porto Salvo is the newest interpretation of Old Italian style cookery lead by executive chef Luigi Ghidetti. The restaurant sets the ambiance at an old Italian port tavern, featuring local draft beers and Ombra (specially selected house red and house white) at a great budget. In addition, extensive list of mostly European wines will certainly bring the flavor of Italy and Spain to your taste buds. Before you decide between classic and special cocktails, you should also notice the ship engine telegraph alongside of the Captain's wheel. Sharing plates such as grandma style veal meatballs and house-made crab cakes is encouraged here just like back in Terracina, Italy. And there is NO TV or WIFI available to guests, so pretend it is 1991 and talk to the beautiful person across from or next to you. Whether you are a new transplant to the South Bronx or a Melrose Mayor, do prepare to enjoy the baby octopus ragout with homemade spaghetti and Sicilian style grilled salmon in Salmoriglio sauce.

Luigi was born in Terracina, Italy and studied in various Italian culinary institutes since he was just 14. He focused intensely on Italian old country style cooking and opened a hostaria la Goletta in 1986. The restaurant received the Il Gambero Rosso award and he was asked to work with chefs from the famed Hotel Danieli in Venice. Looking for more inspiration, Luigi started his world tour in London in 1995 and was then invited to bring Tuscan cookery to New York in 2001. He was soon recognized by James Beard Foundation and featured in New York Times. Continuing his successful tour, in 2006 he took his skill to Bogotá, Colombia where his guests included former President and First Lady Mr. & Mrs. Gaviria. Realizing his heart was still in New York, Luigi decided to come back and settle in the City and opened his Italian winebar. U.S. Supreme Court Justice, a proud Bronxite, Sonia Sotomayor had celebrated her birthday at his establishment.
