About the Business

Phoenix Cleaners originated in 1912, when Richard Singleterry bought a cleaning establishment at North 1st & East Madison. It was called Mutt and Jeff Cleaners then, but he renamed it in the 1920's after a series of fires. He chose "Phoenix" because it kept rising from the ashes like the firebird of legend. Singleterry moved the business to N Denver Ave. at W Archer St. and married Thelma Robinson. That began the line of succession, which went from Thelma to her brother, Ralph Robinson, to his son Gary, to his son Todd, who runs Phoenix Cleaners today with his wife Allison. It's current location is an icon on 18th Street, between South Cincinnati and Boston with hundreds of patrons, some of whom have been customers for 50+ years. Phoenix relocated to East 18th Street in 1932, taking over the space that had been the Nadel maple Ridge Grocery. Singleterry designed and built the art deco building next door, where the cleaning business is now located.

Todd was born into the laundry and dry cleaning business.  In his father's words, "Todd sort of grew up around it."  He took over for his father in 2001 and has successfully run Phoenix Cleaners for over 18 years.  His wife, Allison, has been a part of the Phoenix team for 11 years.  Together, they have continued the Phoenix Cleaners family tradition.  Todd is very much like his father and grandfather before him; constantly fixing machinery, working on the line right along with his employees, and chatting with the customers about what's going on in their lives.  He consistently makes efforts to keep his family's legacy alive and also shift his business services to change with the times. Personal customer service, expert cleaning practices, and a genuine regard for his business and patrons describe Todd.
