About the Business

Walter Malkin installed mechanized equipment and started a long history in the dry cleaning business. But the story starts well before that when a young Walter would travel into London, England by train to stand on a street corner in London, England, and call out “clean your hats, clean your hats”. He became so busy and well-known for his hat cleaning, that after a period of time he was asked if he could clean textiles. This was at the very beginning of “French cleaning” and the process was much different than it is today. Walter’s grandson, Peter, joined the family business before emigrating to Canada in 1977, where they promptly opened Malkin Cleaners in the 1300 block of Marine Drive. In 1990, keeping it in the family, Peter’s son Nigel purchased the business from him and, much like his entreprenurial great-grandfather who started cleaning hats and grew the business to include clothing, has diversified into a carpet cleaners, flood, fire restoration and a commercial laundry.
