About the Business

'The Isis Farmhouse' has housed a riverside hostelry since 1850. Initially a cluster of farm buildings on an island in the River Thames, called 'Berry Mead', the main building was built in about 1850 and became a hostelry very shortly after. The house and gardens were in Berkshire, until 1973, when the county boundary was altered and the Isis Farmhouse was 'claimed' by Oxfordshire. The Berkshire county coroner sat from time to time at the Isis, between 1850 and 1923, to decide the cause of death of drownings, hence there is an old mortuary on site!

Surrounded by the 'Berry mead' SSSI (now erroneously called Iffley Meadow), which is entirely floodplain, the Isis Farmhouse is not accessible by vehicles.

The Isis has, variably, been called the Isis Farmhouse, Isis Tavern, and Isis Hotel. It was owned by Morrells Brewery between about 1855 and 1999, following which it operated, with varying degrees of success, and in various guises, under the ownership of another brewery, until 2008.

Established in 2008.
