About the Business

The Hakka people are originally from central and northern China, but who were encouraged by the Emperor Kangxi to settle in the south east of China in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly in the uplands around the coastal plain. Here they developed a traditional hill-farming cuisine of small but hearty savoury dishes in great variety, put into the middle of the table for all to share, and based on a combination of preserved and fresh foods together.

We began our business with this frame of mind to be shared with York and its occupants in a way that will addict them in experiencing the Hakka culture over and over again.

Specialties

Being the first Hakka Style Chinese restaurant to open in York, our food is inspired by the Chinese Hakka tradition. Subsequently, a section of our menu is dedicated to specialities from the Hakka region including examples of Salt baked chicken, Duck stuffed with rice, Kiu nyuk (braised pork with preserved mustard greens) and Ngiong Tew Foo (fried tofu with minced pork and herbs). There is also a selection of seasonal dishes, changing every two weeks. Dishes are designed for sharing and they would recommend three or four savoury plates per person so that the great variety of taste and particularly texture in this cuisine can be fully explored. Better known dishes will also be available, but freshly cooked to order in the style of the Hakka people. The staff are all knowledgeable about the food and can offer customers guidance as to the flavours and textures of the specialities.
