About the Business

In 1891, Henry H. Elbers entered the field of horticulture in Buffalo; five years later, he was appointed superintendent of the old Parade Grounds (now Martin Luther King Park). After 18 years of developing a renowned public green space, Mr. Elbers was appointed director of the Buffalo Botanical Gardens. With 28 years of experience under his belt, Mr. Elbers opened Elbers Landscape Service in 1919. In 1920, he moved the business to its current location on Main Street in North Buffalo.
The Elbers family operated the business until 1980, when they sold it to James E. Hornung, Sr., and his wife, Elizabeth. Mr. Hornung had been a member of the Elbers staff since 1972.
Today, Elbers Landscape Service is managed by Jim and Elizabeth Hornung and their son, Jim Hornung, Jr.
