About the Business

Our business started as the dream of a Lima-trained chef who found himself far from home. We closed our original 20-seat location after 3 years on King William St. in December 2015. We moved to our own building at 537 Main St.with 45 seats inside & a 30 seat patio, and re-opened there in April 2016. The new space allows us to expand our menu and offer some exciting music/food pairing events to celebrate the unique food and culture of Peru.

Culantro Peruvian Cookery prepares from-scratch food in-house. Free-range chicken, local meats & unique sauces made according to treasured family recipes from imported Peruvian peppers & herbs. Our menu is small & focused: rotisserie chicken,amazing handcut potato, yucca or sweet potato fries, quinoa or veggie side salad, empanadas. And our house-made trio of juices: Chicha Morada (Purple Corn), Guanabana (Soursop) or Maracuya (Passion Fruit).

Juan Baltazar Castillo was born in Peru, and immigrated to San Francisco in the 1990s, where he worked under some of the city's hottest chefs. Ten years later he met his wife, Andrea, who was consulting in San Fran but lived in Hamilton. They ended up marrying, moving to Hamilton and adding a little girl.  They started Culantro in the original 20 seat location at King William St. in 2013, and bought the new 537 Main St. location & re-opened in April 2016.
