Gil grew up in the east end of Hamilton, near Parkdale Avenue, and lived there for 27 years. In 1976, he moved to Burlington. Before starting his own company, he had fourteen years of technical experience and five years experience in management. For the last two years prior to founding Burl-Oak, Gil worked as a Manufacturing Manager, controlling four facilities in Ohio and Tenessee. Upon returning to Canada in 1992, finding the economy in a recession, he decided to open Burl-Oak Systems. Nineteen years later the business is flourishing.
