About the Business

Bougainvillea's has become an institution in the City of South Miami and beyond. The building was built as a home in 1929, renovated over and over to meet the needs of several commercial businesses. Finally to rest as Bougainvillea's Old Florida Tavern, an innovator at a time when South Miami was a ghost town and Sunset Place had months to open. Between the battling with the City of South Miami and Miami-Dade County D.E.R.M., she almost didn't open. The Tavern is constructed of now rare Dade County Pine which was strong and flexible enough to withstand all the hurricanes of the last century. The bar itself is built from all original materials, including an inside wall that separated the band area. In its heyday there were intricate paintings on the floors and walls, if you look closely you can still make out some of the patterns that existed. The citizens of South Miami are proud to call this home a part of their history, tradition, and heritage, one of the few still in existence.

Bougainvillea's is a one-of-a-kind bar that stands out from other Miami spots for three reasons. First, it offers its customers live music five nights a week with NO COVER. We figure if you spend a penny on anything other than alcohol, you're being ripped off (and when surveyed, customers wholeheartedly agree). Secondly, THE VIBE is incomparable: eclectic, laid-back, welcoming. Everybody's on the same page 'cause everybody's there to party--even THE STAFF, Bougainvillea's third special element. The bartenders and servers here are handpicked for their friendliness, attentiveness, and ability to down a shot the second a customer demands it. 'Cause the customer is always right, right?

Commonly referred to as Bougie's, it is as much mine as it is yours: the countless number of regulars, employees and musicians all of whom have had an impact in shaping it to their liking. This bar was built by them and for them, each adding his or her own piece to make it their own.
