About the Business

Bedfords Bar is a beamed Medieval merchant's house, one of the oldest buildings in Norwich, consisting of three floors. The ground and upper floor date back to the 17th century, with the upstairs revealing an impressive ceiling with a multitude of dark rich beams, some of which are thought to have come from ships.

Contrary to popular belief the subterranean basement, now called The Crypt, has never served as a burial site. The basement is in fact a medieval cellar with pointed vaults, built of clinker bricks from around 1470, with a gothic style. The true original purpose of this space was used as a cellar by a merchant to store goods, mainly vegetables. But today it serves as a beautiful space with incredible acoustics to host our infamous events, and celebrations for all our amazing customers.

A refurbishment in 2018 saw the removal of the kitchen, which was turned into The Vault, a secluded premium bar, designed around an industrial theme with both a modern, yet authentic look.

Traditionally over the last 50+ years Bedfords has been one of the city's most unique social and music hubs, right in the heart of Norwich Lanes. Today it’s no different, the owners Glen and Jonathan Carr, along with their dedicated, professional, and hardworking team of staff have achieved great success over the last 10 years and continue to improve and grow the ever-popular bar. A refurbishment in 2018 saw the removal of the kitchen, which is now The Vault, a secluded premium bar situated on the ground floor, and a refit of the summer bar which serves the terrace. Also, a 10k investment into live music events has seen a new stage erected in the Upstairs bar, along with a new PA and lighting setup to give you that professional feel at all live music events. This now means Bedfords has 4 bars, this teamed with amazing wines, a vast selection of spirits from around the world, some of the city's best cocktails, and a portion of Norwich’s finest live music events, all in one of the city's safest and most diverse bars. Glen and Jonathan have been the owners of Bedfords Bar since May 2013, Glen decided to take on the bar after a lengthy career as a doorman as well as running businesses of his own. He didn't want to give up the nightlife completely after retiring from door work so instead took on bar ownership with his son Jonathan.
