About the Business

The business that would become Aurum was started quietly enough in 1964 by a then Rochester Institute of Technology freshman by the name of Paul Michaels.
Originally majoring in architectural design, his attentions turned to jewelry when his roommate asked for assistance in finding a ring for his girlfriend. Word quickly spread, and soon Paul was the unofficial jeweler for the roommate's fraternity. This prompted a change in majors, and Paul was accepted into the School for American Craftsmen at RIT concentrating in jewelry design.

Upon graduation, he immediately went into business as Aurum. As Paul says, "I graduated on a Sunday, and Aurum opened on Monday." Almost half a century later, Aurum is now the longest established jeweler on Elmwood, and undoubtedly one of the most experienced in Western New York.
