About the Business

The Turkey Cafe was designed and built by popular local architect Arthur Wakerley for restaurateur John Winn who leased the café on 29th September 1901. Of Art Nouveau style, the turkey theme of the café is incorporated in two different forms: Wakerley's interpretation of Turkish architecture and the turkey bird at the top of the building. The façade was designed and covered in matt-faced Carraware tiles handmade by the ceramic artist, William Neatby, of Royal Doulton Company.

In 1963 The Turkey Cafe was sold to Brucciani Bakers Ltd, and became a coffee and ice-cream shop which included a 'Ladies Only' room on the upper floor until the passing of the Sex Discrimination Act in 1974.

Rayners Opticians took over the premises in 1983 and restored the façade to its original design at a cost of £30,000 with the replacement tiles being made by Hathernware Ceramics of Loughborough.

Established in 1901.
