About the Business

19 Bar opened in 1952 in Loring Park, an historically gay neighborhood. While it didn't frame itself explicitly as a gay bar, a community formed within this space. The business changed hands in 1957 and began advertising via word-of-mouth as catering specifically to the gay community. Through the following forty years, 19 Bar remained a 3.2 bar, meaning it was only allowed to serve beer up to %3.2 alcohol (i.e. no liquor). After obtaining a full liquor license shortly after the turn of the century, 19 Bar began attracting a wider clientele outside the neighborhood of Loring Park. Some regulars throughout the years have deemed it "gay Cheers," which can arguably be visible through the perceived sense of community which is not limited to the GLBT community, nor race, age, or gender.
